Neurographic Art Self Portraits

Taking Neurographic Art to another level! If you are new to this fun and mindful method of drawing illustration, please check out my other posts first:

This trimester, I decided to change up my Neurographic art assignment to include an element of self-portraiture. Students traced an 8 x 10 photo of themselves as a contour line drawing and then transferred their tracing into a corner of a piece of a 13” by 15” white watercolor paper. They then created Neurographic art and patterns in the background, and included a minimum of 10 personal words which describe their personality, characteristics or traits. These words had to be “stretched or smooshed” in order to fill the space creatively and effectively. (Pro-tip: I found through trial and error that if the kids leave a very small blank space between the letters and the edge of the shape, it helps with the readability of the word.)

I love the addition of a self-portrait to this lesson and the results were dazzling. My 7th graders were invested into making their portraits unique and personal!

All the details of how to do this lesson can be found in THIS INSTRUCTION PACKET.

Enjoy!

We got a bonus project out of these amazing Neurographic Self Portraits! No, we didn’t cut up our beautiful artwork, but I made several color photocopies of each student’s piece, and they selected their favorite parts to crop, embellish, and turn into the pages of these awesome Explosion Books.

This is absolutely beautiful! I use to teach middle schoolers. Now I have little ones, up to 3rd. I can tell the kiddos loved the process.
