Love these! They are so creative while achieving a great 3-D effect. Seem quite good for 7th grade students. I was wondering how much reference material you give your students and what kind.

The key to success with this lesson is creating the illusion of depth through the use of foreground, middle ground, and back ground. We start with some simple discussion about landscape and how size and placement indicate distance. Bigger and Lower = closer and Smaller and Higher = farther. We build the landscapes “sandwich style”, from the bottom up, adding Horizon lines as we go. I guide them at the beginning. You’ll notice everyone starts with a tree on the edge that goes almost all the way up the paper. This establishes the foreground and gives them a good range for setting the illusion of distance through the use of smaller trees (and other things) higher on the picture plane. When we get to the middle ground, they personalize their drawing with their choice of fantasy creature or figure. I have lots of books with dragons, fairies, etc. If you look at my “Winter Windows” lesson, it’s a similar principle.
