Creating the illusion of depth in a drawing is simple if you keep a few tips in mind!

I taught the students that when creating a landscape, things meant to appear closer should be drawn larger and lower in the picture, while things meant to be far away should be drawn higher and smaller in comparison.

 We used these size relationships to help create a landscape that creates the illusion of depth on a 2-dimensional plane. We drew “sandwich style”— (from the bottom up,) starting with the foreground and then continuing on to the middle ground and background.

 Students used watercolor pencils to add color to their landscapes and were taught different blending and mixing techniques to enhance the effect! Students had the choice of incorporating mythological creatures or real animals into their landscapes as well as castles and other natural or manmade elements.
