Action Figure Pattern Designs

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Each student created a tag board “action figure” that represented a hobby or sport of interest to him/her. We traced our figure repeatedly to create areas of positive space, negative space, and overlap. The negative space areas, (the “background”,) were filled with dense patterns in order to provide a contrast with the positive space, (the figure,) which we left blank. We also addressed concepts of balance, pattern, composition and color! These colorful designs were done with markers on colored construction paper. As a final touch, each student outlined one figure with gold or silver for added emphasis.

How did you get your students to all have such good proportions on the figures? Did you use some sort of template? Was it one of those green figures that have joints that bend?

Yes, it was one of those posable green templates, but they personalized it by adding hair and the illusion of clothing, etc.

Awesome! Thank you for sharing your lessons on your blog. My students and I have enjoyed all of the ones we’ve tried so far.
