I absolutely love your lessons that you have done with your 7th and 8th graders. I have a few questions about the way you completed the lesson however. I teach art to 8th graders on the seacoast of NH. Interestingly, my father-in-law used to teach at Masconomet as well.

Ms Amsler I use your site regularly for reference in teaching so thank you. I’m not sure if you are aware your site is consumed by ads. The same ad is copied multiple times down the page and now there is a sliding bar ad at the top that must be slid out of the way in order to access your menu. I just wanted you to be aware your site is becoming difficult to navigate.

I love you lessons, examples and general info on how to perform the lessons. I have a question about the Medieval Illuminations. What kind of paper do you use for this project? I’ve tried several different types that seem to roll up even though it says “for watercolor”. Any advice?

I usually use this paper: https://www.schoolspecialty.com/watercolor-paper-1435382
Good bang for your buck, and it has a good thick quality. A little warping is to be expected, but it won’t curl. When I mount the finished pieces on black paper, I press them overnight and that settles and slight curving.

Hello, i really love your lessons too. I am an art techer from germany. Some lessons i want to try with my classes. I really like your video show at the beginning.Especially the pictures from the 8th grade: Torn paper collages and the abstract painting at hte photo with Will Nelson. Is ther any possibility that you can make an instruction for these lessons? Kind regards. Dana

Hi Dana, The abstract paintings featured in the photo with me and my intern, Will, is a lesson from my colleague who teaches 8th grade, so I don’t have a lesson for that. In general, I am trying to update my website as I do lessons to include more step-by-step pictures and explanation, but some of my projects don’t yet have that because its consuming and in some cases, I haven’t done the lessons recently. Which torn paper collage lesson are you referring to?

Thank you for the fast feedback. I mean the abstract collage in the photoshow on the page: All School art show. Surely you tored black paper and arranged it in a square format. Next: colored papers were added. Then the free areas are worked out with lines. Kind regards. Dana

I just discovered your blog and LOVE your lessons! I am switching from elementary to middle school next year and would love to try some of these projects out. I was wondering how you plan out your units, if you do it by principles and elements or by medium? I also was wondering how frequently you see your students? Great work!

Hi Chelsea, To be honest, I never base a lesson around elements and principles. I design a lesson based on a creative integration of different media and subject matter, with an emphasis on what I think will keep the kids engaged. I weave in vocab and elements and principles naturally as they apply. Prior to this year, I saw my kids daily for 47 minutes, for 12 consecutive weeks. This year I see them for 12 consecutive weeks, but only 4 times a week, three of which are regular 47 minute periods and the 4th of which is a “long block” of 68 minutes. All my classes have their long block on different days and drop their art class on a different day, so honestly, it has been harder to keep them all apace!
